Joker: Folie à Deux will be a sequel to the 2019 film Joker, which starred Joaquin Phoenix as the emblematic clown prince of crime. The narrative was a tenacious exploration into the origin of the malevolent Batman antagonist and rapidly became a box office conversation piece when it arrived. The Todd Phillips film earned over $1 billion globally to become the highest-grossing rated-R film of all time, eclipsing the Ryan Reynolds-led narrative Deadpool, which was the previous titleholder.

The anticipated sequel will bring back Phoenix as the iconic villain, alongside the newly confirmed talents of Lady Gaga. Rumors floated that the notable star would join the film in early June once Warner Bros. revealed that the narrative would reportedly be a musical. Gaga confirmed her casting through social media, posting a brief musical teaser that showcased Phoenix and her character dancing to an instrumental version of the notable jazz number “Cheek to Cheek.”

It’s unclear who Gaga will officially be playing in the upcoming narrative, but many have speculated that she will portray the delirious Harley Quinn. The well-known crazed villain is no stranger to audiences of the DC cinematic universe, having seen various renditions of the character in live-action and animated form. Margot Robbie has recently been the figure attached to the character, having played Quinn in Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey, and James Gunn’s 2021 film The Suicide Squad.

Gaga last appeared in Ridley Scott’s 2021 film House of Gucci and is almost four years removed from the Academy Award-nominated performance in Bradley Cooper’s 2018 A Star Is Born. Phoenix won his first Academy Award for his captivating performance in Joker to become the second actor to win an Academy Award for playing the iconic villain. Heath Ledger was the first to do so after posthumously winning for his performance in Christopher Nolan’s 2012 film The Dark Knight.

It’s uncertain what to expect from Joker: Folie à Deux with not much surfacing regarding the unknown plot for the upcoming narrative. However, the term “Folie à Deux” refers to a shared delusional disorder, which could possibly be a clue to Gaga’s casting as Quinn alongside Phoenix. Nevertheless, audiences will expect a film that engrosses them just as thoroughly as the ground-breaking original with a revamped formula that may elevate the narrative to unimaginable heights.

Joker: Folie à Deux will hit theaters October 4, 2024.
